Ovations Musical Theatre

Blair's annual spring musical theatre production, Ovations, takes the stage April 26-28.
 
Ovations 2018,  "A Star Is Born," is about heroes. As part of the musical revue format of Ovations, this year includes highlights from Newsies, Urinetown, Hamilton, 9 to 5, Moana and Hercules. Come enjoy great singing, dancing and acting as Blair students grades 6-12 explore stories about standing up for oneself.
 
This annual spring musical theatre production at Blair is moving to a different venue this year, Porticos Art Space (on Washington Blvd.). Show are 8 pm, Thu. Fri. and Sat. April 26-28, with a matinee show at 2 pm on Sat. Apr. 28 as well.
 
Professional sound, lighting, music and choreography support the students' performances. Ovations is produced by Blair instructor Amanda Engstrom and directed by Kellen Law. Ovations is sponsored by BlairLEARNs, and has also received grants from the Pasadena Showcase House for the Arts. The performers have also sold ads in the program to raise funds to cover costs, held restaurant nights and have a gofundme campaign. Support the show!

Meet the Director, Kellen Law!
 
Kellen Law
Kellen is a singer, actor, and teaching artist. Kellen not only loves making her own art, but is also passionate about helping others to discover and develop their artistic abilities. She enjoys exploring the many ways that the arts intersect with various subject areas and aspects of students lives. As a teacher, Kellen has been blessed to work with organizations around the country including New York Theatre Workshop, Seattle Children’s Theatre, The Pasadena Playhouse and the Pasadena Unified School District. A native of Pasadena, California, she holds a B.F.A. in Acting from Syracuse University and an M.A. in Educational Theatre from New York University (NYU).

Meet the Choreographer, Darrian O'Reilly!
 
Darrian is a LA-based choreographer, performer, and instructor. She grew up on a farm in the mountains of Santa Cruz, California and spent a great deal of her youth watching musicals from the 1940s and 50s with her grandparents. At eighteen she moved to New York with aspirations of choreographing for Broadway but found her home in experimental dance scene in downtown Manhattan. Here in LA, she enjoys regular collaborations with visual artists, musicians, and film directors. She choreographed the dance film "Sleepers" which was an official selection at the Utah Film Festival 2018. Her original work has been presented at the Tannery World Arts and Cultural Center, The Performance Bar, Redcat, Electric Lodge, HomeLA, and Highways Performance Space. She is currently a guest artist at El Camino College and teaches yoga at UCLA and American Musical and Dramatic Academy. She received a BA from NYU in 2012 and her MFA in Dance from UCLA in 2017. She is thrilled to choreograph a musical with Blair students, and the experience has rekindled her great love of the American musical! For more info check out www.darrianoreilly.com
