Spanish Dual Language Immersion

Blair proudly offers a Spanish Dual Language Immersion Program (DLIP) at the middle school and high school levels.  We have had our middle school Spanish DLIP since 2014, and high school Spanish DLIP since 2017. We are the only high school Spanish DLIP program in PUSD.
 
The goal of our DLIP is to prepare students to be globally aware citizens and leaders by teaching them the linguistic skills and cultural knowledge of two of the most frequently spoken languages in the world. 
 
Our middle school students take two courses taught entirely in Spanish each year: a specialized Spanish Language Arts class and social studies. Once they reach high school, DLIP students are to take 4 years of advanced Spanish language and literature, and three years of social studies in Spanish.

Students visit elementaries
Enriching learning activities for SDLIP students have included field trips to Olvera Street, Univision Spanish language television studios and San Rafael and Jackson elementary schools. The visits to San Rafael and Jackson, the alma mater of the students, were for students to share their original book creations, rewriting classic fairy tales into updated stories complete with original illustrations. Hands-on garden activities on the Blair East campus--conducted in Spanish of course--were combined with keeping garden journals and researching and writing papers about plants.
 
Blair SDLIP teacher, Maestra Elizabeth Najera-Bustillos, was named PUSD's Teacher of the Year in June 2019!
